Sometimes your content (and argumate and others) gets reposted to insta or BuzzFeed and now my girlfriend just asks "is this your friend"?
What’s really wild is seeing your stuff posted to Twitter and realizing users you recognize are in fact people you know in real life cause they recognize the real-you from the [tumblr] posted to Twitter
Like, my post is entirely in reaction to the Facebook post included there as image that the new “hey here’s some stuff” feed showed me. (Not knocking, “hey here’s some stuff” has been the basis of mass media since newspapers)
I started checking out with DS9 and haven’t personally watched any since Voyager.
it actually goes beyond elon musk unbanning the guy who posted CSAM not only are blue checks saying that it’s the right thing to do because the guy is definitely “fighting against pedophilia” by circulating CSAM on social media, but they’re also giving each other tips on how to post more CSAM and bypass moderation!
A weird thing of this whole episode is 2010-web-worker-left-hangover types speaking like, from industry-side experience with user-generated content. Because it’s like
Yes, I think you are definitely on to something here in that QAnon circles are well-exposed to this “CSAM” stuff and in fact hold it central to their subculture not even to jack off to but as sort of a secret guild knowledge that is used to move their passions and justify their self-understanding as the guardians and reformers of social order. And that that is – even if distinct from your stereotypical playground-lurking perv – kind of weird and really does not recommend them.
But, when then you’re like “oh yes these specific images – which we all know but I won’t name – the exact kind of reason why you can’t let allow the enemy-tribe Musk disrupt our regime of control over the public sphere"…
Like, without getting into "equivalency” discourse you have to appreciate that with the strength of your attack you’ve undermined your own position there.
I have for a while said that a major characteristic of the next major cultural shifts will be a move away from post-70s concepts of protecting youth from adult sexuality (and sexual adults) and part of it is they’ve been so deeply incorporated into society that it has been adopted as a core part of the self-understanding of both sides of various fights that at least one is gonna have to make sense of losing
(Whereas last cycle it was something you could transcend divisions to unite around)
So when I talk about how you can go to Seattle and tell Japanese from Japanese-Americans on the street by subtle personal style touches—
Look at that 6th picture, from philtrum through ribcage. No way is that lipstick a Japanese style, yet that hair definitely is.
Which how do you explain that? Well, looking it up she’s a model in Tokyo – where she gets the hair – who works the Insta/OnlyFans online pinup circuit, which is the international community she takes shoot makeup cues from.
the only Threads i care about is the harrowing 1984 brittish tv movie documenting a thoroughly researched hypothetical scenario of nuclear attack upon Sheffield and it’s after effects
The fundamental [tumblr] vs. Twitter thing is that Twitter treats replies and reblogs as creating a subforum about that particular post, and no bby what is you doing
twitter is like. DNI with me unless you are a perfect clone of me. and tumblr is like. hi. you share exactly one interest with me. would you like to subliminally influence each other’s thought patterns through funny text posts until we develop a hive mind? yeah? cool.
One thing that’s important for everyone who wants to Make Number Go Up to know is that getting famous on tumblr is a very bad way to do it. I’m not like, tumblr famous, but based on the polls that float around, I’m around 97th percentile in follower count - my blog is around ten years old and I’ve been making original posts consistently for close to 4 years now
Within 3 months of joining TikTok, one of my good friends had well over 3 times my current tumblr follower count from a single viral TikTok. And it wasn’t even, like, viral viral!
I’m on here because the way people go viral and build followings on sites like TikTok and twitter scares me. I like gaining followers and getting notes but I also like being in my tiny corner of the internet and not being exposed to The Horrors. If you’re mad about not getting enough reblogs, go post on twitter!
The flip side of this is you have appreciably more traction on a follower’s life here on [tumblr], the connections are less promiscuously numerous but thicker
Looking back on it, I think the thing that most made me despair of the adjacency with wordcel/shape-rotator bullshit last year was that it didn’t seem to move the needle on anyone’s opinion of anyone. You had all these people being like “well I don’t think it’s true that people with degrees in the humanities or social sciences have a lower class of brain and implicitly don’t merit a place in real Smart People Spaces because a Jungian quack who has arbitrarily declared himself the voice of science and logic said so, but this seems like a reasonable position that could be a real gem with a bit of amendment, and I certainly would never dream of respecting a person’s belief system less because that was a part of it.” Fuck off.
One of the things that drew me to the adjacency in the first place was that while it was mostly made up of STEM people, they had a genuine curiosity about a lot of topics outside of that collection of fields and didn’t usually fall victim to the sort of petty departmental turf wars that seem to be the bread and butter of every nerdy undergrad. It’s a shame that this seems to have waned over the years.
‘wordcell and shape rotator discourse’ seemed so obviously stupid on its face it took me like a week to realize it wasn’t some new elaborate bit everyone was doing.
u mean it wasn’t
Felt like more of a TPOT thing? But there’s an infinite appetite everywhere for pseudo objective schemes that let you split people into “cool smart people like me” and other
this?
TPOT is the designation for what was once called “post-rationalist Twitter” but has expanded in scope such that it probably needed a new name. The boundaries are (deliberately) quite fuzzy, but if you imagine a collection of people who are kinda rat-adj but also very into “vibes” and indistinct spiritualism, and also quite chummy with both blueglobe Twitter and rightoid trad Twitter, you’ve basically got the gist of it.
had a dream that twitter started selling little subscription pronoun markers to put next to the blue checkmarks and if you didn’t buy one elon musk would personally assign you a gender and add it to your account
