Just finally getting a broad enough view to realize how weird it was that Tom Petty and Aerosmith were mainstays of MTV when I was in middle school in the 90s
God, remember Revolution X, the 1994 Aerosmith-themed arcade gun game?

I will say the sense of Elon Musk being a figure of technology leadership because he’s rich is similar to but not interchangeable with the ‘90s vibe of Bill Gates being rich because he was a figure of technology leadership.
Remember the collect call theatre of the AT&T/Sprint/MCI long distance wars, 1-800-COLLECT and 1-800-CALL-ATT and all? I literally got amnesia once but those commercials had drilled it in so deep I remembered to use 1-800-COLLECT
I guess it’s going through high school in the ‘90s but I liked camisoles and spaghetti-strap tops. I was more into the clavicles than the tits, but I was absolutely into the tits.
The reward for waiting out the ‘10s is I am now waiting on which of five cultural tracks is gonna tip in a way I’m prepared for first while everywhere I hang in the interim is competing to best remind me of my personal early-90s golden age
The Fugees’ 1996 The Score is a real dividing line in my memory
Thinking about “return to the office”/“work from home” dynamics, how part of the appeal of offices in the 90s was that office computers were networked (to share printers) and thus before true online gaming were like the one place you could play Quake deathmatches on the reg. Also in an age of 14.4/28.8/56k modems, offices would split a T1 or T3 line, which meant you could host a server on there that at least at non-work hours could handle scores of modem users at full capacity at once
Seconding the motion that you’d probably be into hair metal if you gave it a try. A lot of it holds up better than people expect, especially if you’re already into harder rock and themes of self-destructive hedonism
Honestly I think my biggest barrier is I grew up after rock became our default music and before hip-hop displaced it so I’m used to guitar as background default, not prepared to parse it as something to demonstrate individualistic virtuosity on
This is unironically why I preferred Butch Vig and Garbage to Billy Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins
