Just had a WEIRD experience playing Rocket League online where I very much suspect I was automatched on the team of two Arab nobles against three sequentially numbered servant accounts (only one manned)

don’t put a fishing mini game in your game. just don’t. don’t fucking put any fishing mini game in your fucking game. no-one likes fishing mini games except the people who bought sega bass fishing and were forced to mentally rewire themselves to think they were having fun. it is never fun to sit around for 40 years waiting for a fucking garbage fish to pick up the lure. just don’t do it. don’t have a fishing mini game. just don’t. don’t do it. i can’t stress this enough. do not ever fucking do it

Three more BF1 observations

I appreciate that they don’t make direct communication easy but it would be nice to have options to send “Drat!” or “Nice!” to your killer

So much respect to anyone who drives a vehicle with side weapon and keeps that field of view in mind

This is an insight I’m willing to port to the real world: it’s striking where we class veteran/fresh/irregular troops as the same thing because the challenges and uses of each are very different

This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest video game mascots of all time.

Segata had a short reign, but in only two years he cemented himself as an inspiration to us all, a true hero along the path of gaming.
There’s a lot to be had in life. There’s so many games out there to discover and enjoy, and there’s so many games that have yet to be made. We’ve only scratched the surface.

A life of gaming is not to be taken lightly! Play! Play until your fingers break!

you know how I know I’m getting old?

I’m playing a Final Fantasy game and it’s like “here’s some girls with they titty out”

and I’m like “pf I’m not even going to bother with the h-dojins”

and it’s like “here’s some animations of them bending over with they titty out”

and I’m impatiently mashing buttons like “FUCK THIS I WANT TO CHANGE MY ACCESSORIES”

Been playing Final Fantasy XV. As a longtime franchise loyalist who noped out of the brand after 12, it’s a welcome reintroduction. In ways it feels like a tribute to the other urban fantasy entries (7, 8, the X and 13 series) in the way that IX was a tribute to the high fantasy ones.

Cute how you can always trace design trends and themes through Square games as some experimental concept from 7 years ago gets developed or revived for a new game.

The “bros on a road trip” thing works better thematically and as a mechanic than I expected; I suspect the thing to do would be contrast it with X-2′s all-girl Spice World vibe but I’m not playing X-2 again.

One thing though, the world visuals. They still have the Square-brand epic vistas and lighting and palettes (seriously, those guys do “the carefree happiness of green fields under a blue spring sky” like no one’s business) but everyone does epic open worlds now and it really shows that they’re forcing legacy technology. Things like terrain and hair look like a “HD update” of a last-gen engine (and probably were, compare how GTA5 went out with story and online half-cooked before the console generation it was built for went obsolete), you see them do foliage and it’s like SpeedTree was never invented.

What do you think of the other Sim games?

Anonymous asked: What do you think of the other Sim games?

bloodandhedonism:

You mean by Maxis? (And I guess EA now.)

I’ve only ever played the SimCity series (up to and including 4) and the first Sims game, so I can’t comment on the others, but many of them look like they that classic 90s computer game vibe to them, which is always appreciated. OTOH it seems like most of them weren’t that great either. Maxis’s history pre-EA was pretty wild, look it up sometime.

Otherwise, uh, hmm. I was one of the few people in the world to prefer SimCity to the Sims, judging from the attention and sales records the latter series received.

SimFarm was kinda crap in endgame but underrated overall

SimEarth was not as deep as SimCity which it was pitched on par with, and a little ‘70s goofy but in that earnest optimistic way personal computers came out of

SimCopter was a cash-in

SimAnt was fuckin’ solid

SimTower was a great way to spend 2 hours in the summer

Right-militant symbolism encountered in the last two months playing the Battlefield franchise of online shooters:

  • One Nazi flag profile image, all colors and proportions on-model
  • A wide variety of South American users and private servers with 4-letter clan tags and logos (frequently in quartered unit patch format with skulls and lightning bolts as prominent elements) that map to local paramilitaries
  • A few Rising Sun flags and uyoku dantai slogans
  • (just now) one profile tag consisting of a large silver police shield bearing an image of a modern rifle above the large numbers “88″ in blue

Left-militant symbolism:

  • One profile image of a red flag with yellow hammer and sickle flapping in the wind

Still playing Battlefield One, though the new Civilization is tempting.

I remember in the ‘90s the US Air Force saying that primary flight training went a lot quicker because thanks to video games the trainees came in with a baseline intuitive sense of how to fly an airplane.

I wonder if the same holds true for foot soldiers now. I’m realizing that from playing this stuff, I’ve developed an intuitive sense of how to breach and clear rooms in teams, how to plan an advance under cover and how to mount a reverse slope defense, how to overlap fields of fire, enfilade and defilade.

You know what would be a good premise for a terrain-combat game? “Bandit Country”, about the IRA in South Armagh and their use of “dead ground” to attack observation towers. It’d make for shitty multiplayer though, the British Army side would be “maintain constant vigilance, very very occasionally you explode”
