Interesting that she attributes some backlash to hangover from the electorate being too in their #Resistance cups last Trump-era election cycle and supporting trendy leftism they now realize they don’t actually like as governing philosophy; I really think, big picture, possibly the most significant role Trump played was tripping an assembling left order before it was complete and triggering it to shake itself apart

During closing arguments in the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard, one of Heard’s attorneys, Benjamin Rottenborn, described a series of Catch-22s that often ensnare women who, like Heard, accuse their partners of domestic violence. “If you didn’t take pictures, it didn’t happen; if you did take pictures, they’re fake,” he said. “If you didn’t tell your friends, you’re lying; and if you did tell your friends, they’re part of the hoax. If you didn’t seek medical treatment, you weren’t injured; if you did seek medical treatment, you’re crazy.”

I mean it strikes me that people’s issues with Heard aren’t so much that, put in a no-win situation, she didn’t win, but that she was even trying to win, that as she continued in the relationship she acted in ways that weren’t even attempts to get what she wanted in the relationship, but set herself up in a better position to portray the relationship to others afterwards – including but not limited to in court – in a way that won their sympathy and advanced her overall position in life to which the relationship was just one aspect (presumably, in expectation of it ending – it’s unclear what she could do with documentation of abuse in a world where the semipublic relationship continued)

It strikes me that this – conducting your life for the sake of winning public sympathy battles after the fact – might be the real of-the-moment thing the culture is publicly condemning here.

Quebec’s majority government has adopted its contentious language bill overhauling the Charter of the French language, in a vote that lasted only minutes at the National Assembly this afternoon.

Dissent over Bill 96 had escalated in recent weeks with thousands holding protests, denouncing the bill for impeding on the rights of anglophones, allophones and Indigenous communities.

The bill is large in scope, limiting the use of English in the courts and public services and imposing tougher language requirements on small businesses and municipalities.

It also caps the number of students who can attend English-language colleges, known as CEGEPs, and increases the amount of French courses students at the colleges must take.

Two opposition parties voted against the law. The Parti Québécois said the legislation did not go far enough in protecting the French language in Quebec, while Quebec Liberal Party Leader Dominique Anglade denounced the bill’s use of the notwithstanding clause, saying it goes too far.

The notwithstanding clause allows a province to override basic freedoms guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Instead of just applying the clause to specific parts of Bill 96, the government applied the clause to the entire bill, making every aspect of the far-reaching law immune to legal challenges based on the charter.

I know. Framing this as “just 3 courses in Cegep” has compmetely blinded most people in Québec and outside of it to the actual impacts this will have, to just how far-reaching and incredibly reckless, racist, and xenophobic this truly is. The CAQ has lied to Québecois, and misrepresented facts at every turn. Anybody who read the bill and its various amendments as it trotted its merry way through the latest session at l’Assemblée Nationale could see it plainly for what it was: using the supposed decline of French in the province (it isn’t actually declining - only unilingual use of french is declining, more people in Québec speak french than ever, but more Québecois speak other languages as well, which is the part the CAQ does NOT mention when they talk about “le déclin”) as an excuse to erode the rights of non-unilingual-french Quebecers, establish a system of second-class citizens by law, and discourage most of the world’s population from settling down in Québec.

Just imagine, for instance, telling a refugee that they have to get accustomed to a new place, get their paperwork in order, find a place to live, find work, find a family doctor, contact all of the support groups they may need, AND learn a complex language they may have NEVER heard before. In six months.

I took French for 9 years. 9 YEARS.

I couldn’t pass the language requirement to even apply for residency.

Can someone explain to me how we got to gamer being a sexual archetype of male golden-hearted innocence , ala “golden retriever gamer boy”( the new stereotypical man for a bi woman to date according to tik-tok) , like we went from gamers being childish in a violent mean spirited way to being synonymous with misogynistic nerds to this? How do streamers factor in? It is an intriguing reversal! How in-demand is that? Well, I haven’t seen it in the wild, but I’m not on TikTok; I’m an out-of-touch old person for this purpose.

Yeah I’m not sure (both on the question of how in-demand and how new the concept is).

It came up in conversation with @dagny-hashtaggart yesterday that girlfan favourite Alistair from the Dragon Age games is this trope, for instance. (Okay, he’s a version of this trope that can fight, but that’s pretty required of a party member, the most salient facts about him for my purposes here are that he’s dorky, kind and iirc-explicitly sexually inexperienced.)

I mean I should point out that when I was actually a teenager it was sort of Understood that sexually experienced guys might be hot in theory, but in real life you wanted to date someone whose level of experience was not too far from your own. The sexually unthreatening boyband member is a well-established trope dating back before Paul McCartney. And Tik Tok is full of actual teenagers. So.

Hypothesis that this is less a change in what girls actually want, and more a change in the extent to which girls produce content about the attainable realistic hottie of their dreams, a once mostly-male practice (wrt stuff that got exposure)

I don’t think there is anything to explain until you show me evidence that this is a thing, and at the same time, as soon there is evidence that this is a thing, it crosses into the mainstream and will cause lasting discourse.

Its absolutely a thing; The #gamerboy tag on Tiktok has 3.4 billion net views, and gets you things like Advanced Cuddling Positions w/ Your Gamer BF and transfem gamerboy hotness clips. You can explore the tag but very apparent to see its place in the #vibe space.

As for why, well I think its two fold. One, teens have way less cultural memory, so you want to look for “breaks” in internet communities. Like Reddit wasn’t a break from its predecessors; as a venue reddit copied memes & posts from other websites and discussed them, therefore inheriting the baggage of the old internet as it evolved it. Youtube however did that much less as it grew in popularity, and Tiktok does it not at all; content on Tiktok, due to being short video ai-voiceover/text overlay content, is pretty much all unique to the platform. As such 2005 gamer stereotypes simply don’t carry over very much. 

That leads to why the new stereotypes are far more positive and weren’t just re-invented like for some other groups. I would generally pin that down to the rise of streaming and e-celebrities that became everyone’s first-brush exposure to a ‘gamer’ identity, and streamer celebs are charismatic, funny, and engaging by definition. Even though the audience for streaming is majority male its still way more approachable, its 35%+ female and reaches way more people than actually playing a game ever could. E-girl rose from twitch & youtube, gamerboy is the genderswapped version, its required.

Additionally I think avenues for teen hate are way more political these days; hating nerds is cringe, hating misogynists is vogue, but I lack confidence on that last one.
