honestly there’s a very specific breed of southwestern pastel aesthetic – succulents but not cacti, space but not astronomy, fitness brands but not fitness tips, retro restaurants but not food, always pictures, never text – that has been around on this website for so long and remained so unchanged that, by no virtue other than the passing of time and the changing of the world around it, it has begun to read “bot” or “narc” or “psyop.” something about me has changed in the last decade as a reader. my ability to trust people who only post striking but unrememberable images with six-figure notes and never reveal anything about themselves is gone, and my skepticism is all locked in my inability to tell whether a person is real or not
do inactive tumblrs get the “-blog” suffix appended automatically now? like how dead tumblrs would show up in old reblogs as “-deactivatedDDMMYYYY” (maybe so the name could get reused?)
I sincerely apologize for spamming you all with the Hamilton fanfic controversy, but it’s really giving me so much strength. It’s been a while since we’ve had the kind of scandal that only Tumblr can provide (like the person who robbed graves; the person who mailed their toe to another person so they could make a necklace of it; etc). This scandal is just so fucking good, you know? White American college girl pretends to be a nonbinary Chinese-Pakistani Muslim human-trafficking survivor AND their American WOC wife and they live in India??? And they suffered a miscarriage? And they both have HIV? All so she can scam people out of money and amass kudos on Archive of Our Own for her Hamilton HIV fanfic? And she does this for YEARS? And the person who uncovered it is doing it for revenge because the fake-HIV-fanfic writer made them delete a fanfic about Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Jefferson as cannibal mermaids performing oral sex and unironically accused them of gentrifying cannibalism??? I mean, this shit is fucking gold.
Sarah Barthel & Josh Carter here…we play in a band called Phantogram.
Our new album “Three” just came out. If some of the songs seem very dark…it’s because they are. They’re highly-personal portraits from our past; snapshots of tragedy, loss, and all the emotions that follow. For those of you who don’t know, we did actually suffer a great loss this past year, when we lost our sister Becky (Sarah’s sister) to suicide.
It crushed us.
We went through a wide range of emotions…loneliness, depression, desperation. And it was hard to find focus. The biggest support we had was each other, and of course, our close friends and family. We talked, we hurt, and we’re still talking. Still keeping on. But it wasn’t easy getting to this point.
We thought about how tragic life can be at times, how the world can bring you down…and we ended up learning that you have to try to find the beauty in it. It’s okay to not feel okay, and it’s okay to ask for help. We even thought about you guys (our fans & friends), and what you’d think about when listening to this album. And if you or someone you know is experiencing any issues with mental health - please don’t be afraid to get help.
Communication was our way of dealing with it…and we think it can help you too. Find love & support in each other, and don’t stop talking. Don’t stop sharing your stories or your advice.

since then Tumblr’s been giving me eerily-precisely targeted stuff, political ads from the Oregon lumber lobby appealing to Portland lifestylers, other stuff pitching things I was already just on the edge of considering
don’t know if that really is what a skeletal ad team looks like under rapid deadlines vs. healthy, don’t even know who would benefit from juggling this stuff around but hair on my neck’s still at half-staff
