Eduardo Bolsonaro, the 35 year old son of the President of Brazil, who likes to livestream himself playing CS GO (famed team MIBR are friendly with him and his dad) and shooting at firing ranges (when he’s not crying at them) retweeted this comparison of him on the right and the 24 year old son of the Argentinean president elect Estanislao Fernandez, who works as a graphic designer and likes to crossplay (click through for some great costumes) on the left. Estanislao didn’t reply directly, but criticized Eduardo on his own twitter account for being a failson who made all his money from his father while he works for a living and had to sell his costumes to make ends meet. President Bolsonaro is currently trying to appoint Eduardo to the plum job of ambassador to the United States. When asked to defend himself, Eduardo replied “I have experience around the world. I have done a student exchange program. I know how to fry hamburgers. … I can speak English. and I’ve seen closely the great respect that Americans have for Brazilians.”

so the FBI, in their investigation of the poway synagogue shooter, got a search warrant for 8chan’s servers, because he’d posted not only about that crime but also an earlier arson attack he’d committed on a mosque. only thing is, since 8chan clearly identifies people responding to posts that a user has made, the FBI outed the tripcode they were using in the messages, making it very easy to see what they were posting. it’s an interesting insight into how western governments do their online psyops:

i’m quite certain that this stuff is done regularly across the web. we’ve all heard about the russian and chinese troll farms of course, given how useful that is in stoking tensions, but british intelligence has jtrig and the integrity initiative, south korea’s intelligence agency had a team dedicated to making online posts in the 2012 election in favour of the conservative candidate, america has operation earnest voice under the military’s purview, the centre for strategic counterterrorism communications under the state department, and probably one at every intelligence agency besides. donald trump even went to visit the opening ceremony for one of saudi arabia’s versions. and rest assured, these people have almost certainly read the reams of psychological research on group dynamics.

At this distance all the street art I hear about in Shepard Fairey’s old Hollywood stomping grounds these days is right-wing, either The Faction or SABO.

There is a tradition of Gen X West Coast counter/subcultural right-cynicism though, expressed through humor and cartooning – Jim Goad and Nick “A. Wyatt Mann” Bougas at Answer Me!, Suck.com (large portions of which was absorbed by Reason magazine), Peter Bagge and Hate, John Swartzwelter writing for Army Man and The Simpsons

Really it was part of the same cultural ecosystem as Fairey and Adbusters, honestly as Spy and Vice and Bloom County and Life In Hell and Calvin & Hobbes tbh, even Beavis & Butthead/Daria, a Gen X disillusionment with/loathing of the normie world

But then that became the culture and got its edges softened and everyone forgot how to operate as a counterculture

(I was lately like “wow, Hard Times and Reductress AND Babylon Bee are all really good rn, why is all the good satire subculture-specific?” Then I realized The Onion’s “overeducated college town slacker with Thoughts about pop culture” was subculture at debut)
