That’s part of why I long for the 70s so, the live sense that the institutions of “the family” and “childhood” were on their way out

on one hand the dream of artificial wombs (instead of tech we went pharmaceuticals and third-world labor, ain’t that the story) and on the other the latchkey reality that they have their own lives and might leave you alone to get by for what you actually, truly were – a usable, disposable object
