Suddenly strikes me that Utena is absolutely about tall towers, high vantage points, dueling platforms suspended in space where positioning is sometimes a consideration but there is 0 threat anyone is ever going to fall over the edge
It’s a relic of Japan’s entanglement with turn-of-the-20th century Germany that both Utena and Evangelion depict the world as run by strings being pulled from weirdly esoteric conference tables

Looked at from another angle, Utena is a testament to how far you can get by on aesthetics alone, that J.A. Seazer score and Ohotori Academy backgrounds and thematic resonance and formalist shadow puppet aliens servicing a plot that at no point actually made sense
