Like maybe 2010s normies that were actually somewhat 1990s weirdo-ward of 90s normies, but kinda superficially.

Like two days in the nineties aside, staying pretty cool this year so far.

Definitely some small businesses and probably even a few small property owners over the last few years who’ve put a good deal of time and energy into making a go of things along the main drag here as the neighborhood comes up before bowing out whose efforts ultimately went not towards producing wealth or social influence for themselves but, by lifting up the neighborhood in general, for the larger property owners, developers, and realtors of the area.

I’ve been pretty out of it for some important years lately and was never great west of the river, but Ground Kontrol (or Quarterworld if he’s on the east side) is a nice arcade, the Oregon Historical Society museum is pretty neat but then I’m a history fan, Powell’s bookstore downtown is a classic, the Japanese gardens up in the hills if he wants to walk around outside and Skyline Boulevard in the West Hills if he wants to drive

Mathing it out if those neighbors leave and combine the adjacent lot for multifamily construction when their kids move out in a decade or so, depending on number of units feasible (and basement units/extended family compounds already here) the new building would suddenly constitute from 40% to 75% of all the households living on the block. Which is both the promise and cost of residential densification, I suppose.

The irony of people complaining that since being normalized, everywhere in cities smells like weed, is that before, public places in Portland – crowds, streets like Hawthorne, bars where people ducked out to have a bowl – smelled like that regularly (I am convinced that local author Ursula LeGuin’s The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is based on Portland, and that would be the drooz perfuming the city). But now not, because everyone’s switched to vaping, which doesn’t leave a smell. So we’re smoking weed in the mall, the restaurant, at work, etc.…

Okay no that’s funny, it’s a straight-sided lap pool and I’m pretty sure these skaters got in cause they knew they were supposed to skate in drained pools but once they got in there wasn’t anything to do and they had to clamber back out
