Exploring the lowbie bar zone for the first time since everything resumed again and it’s developing excellently, it’s apparently now the arted-up area like Alberta was when I came to town and the reigning aesthetic I first encountered in fucking 2000s Silverlake, walked some of the side streets and they reminded me intensely of my hometown residuum in the 1980s before sone of the polish took off. I don’t regret not settling here – it’s like a 25 minute walk, less by 2 wheels, less by the mother bus line, and the lots are narrower and shallower, I couldn’t have the backyard setup or trees

Well, didn’t sleep that well cause I needed to flip my mattress so I didn’t get out of bed til 3, but I got it together to wash all my bedclothes, hump a bunch of wood up from the basement, saw through the stumps, and use a cultivator mattock to work a hairball of bamboo rhizomes apart to trim the stand back. Then I walked to the not-closest-but-I-prefer-their-indica dispensary, now I’m in the just-out-of-college district I correctly moved not to but in walking distance to, starting my evening at the burrito place with fuckhuge margaritas and then hitting the 26-year-old-office-girls bar, so that ended up working pretty well

In the bathrooms!? Unbelievable!

It was like living in “Reed College.”

Walked by the park and they’ve filled the pool again this year and the afterhours teenagers were back, playing and flirting and listening to like, Sex and Candy and Possum Kingdom, in a really on-the-nose demonstration that Portland is back to being the wonderland I dreamed of in 90s high school

The 2020 riots had the ultimate effect of shaking out some legacy alignments that had been going on inertia and shifting Portland politics as far to the right as possible, really do wonder if that’s gonna be the long-run legacy of this whole 2010s left thing

why did you vote against fluoridation?

Anonymous asked:

why did you vote against fluoridation?

Well if Portland did something unlike any other city in America that was a very strong argument for, in my opinion fresh in town

Recalling that retirement communities form in low cost-of-living areas without jobs for every service-consuming resident, that bit in the original Portlandia “Dream of the 90s” song about how Portland was “where young people go to retire” was dead on for 2011

Realizing the huge reservoir of flatland air that exchanges with the ocean through mountain passes in a stream above the Columbia River (that Portland is along) moderates and delays temperature changes not only in the sense it’s nighttime-chilly until 2PM and daytime-warm until 2AM, but it also means open window season doesn’t really hit until near the actual start of summer but it lasts pretty deep into fall

it continues to amaze me how often Americans have to literally get on their knees in front of police

That’s even worse than I thought it was.

somehow “I’m here to film you brutalising innocent civilians” isn’t the get out of brutalisation free card that some journalists thought it was.

This is the most amazing thing to me. Like, are there journalists who really think the legalisms that are being run over roughshod when it comes to protesters will be magically respected because they hold up a press badge? It’s not like being a Respectable Citizen is a force field protecting anybody else right now.

I think it’s that they expect a level of rational self interest from police. Attacking a journalist is a much stupider thing to do from a purely selfish cost benefit analysis, because they’re the people who can spread it the most, so you are more likely to face punishment.

I think the likelihood of any cop facing punishment for anything that happens at these protests is very, very low, and I think they know that. And the reports should, but maybe I’m just jaded.

I’m just amused by the journalist at a riot in a scrum as police lines engage going “I’m special, I’m the protagonist, Vice publishes me!” and expecting the police to stop, listen, and nod like “well, then”.

I hate cops and I hate journalists, so I don’t know who to root for here. But yes, that is precisely how a journalist thinks things will go.

Yeah, with Portland ‘20 it combined with “everyone who Posts considers themselves a journalist”

It’s 2022 and Dungeons and Dragons still doesn’t have a core player race with a creepy/spooky angle. The only two times I ever played Dungeons and Dragons, all character creation was limited to just the basic player’s handbook, and that would have still given me options as goofy as part dragon or part devil or a magical robot, but not any kind of aberration-based race? No slimy ghoulie creepo??? You’re telling me there’s unethical wizards running around making new kinds of owlbears like an oregonian makes a sushi burrito and there’s no level one farmboys or barmaids with ANY tentacles? There should be a shitload

Yeah, Portland is downstream of Hawaiian food trends, it’s weird

At one of my local bars, which has apparently decided to pick up the menu, aesthetic, patio, and patronage from a place I liked that got sold to redevelop closer in a few years ago, and apparently got a booker for comedy and bands on Thursdays and weekends

It is just downright comical how each new unexpected development about like, anything since I recovered turns out to be exactly in my favor as hard as possible, that several years ago I aimed at where I expected things to be by now and after sone major detours proved exactly correct

There seems to have been only scattered and halfassed attempts at public-facing businesses in commercial space around this neighborhood between 1978 and 2011, so all the veteran holdovers are real period pieces, if you want country crafts, a hi-fi set, or an abortion, you’re set
