So when I first met polyamorous people at the New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom in like 1998 they weren’t all lumpy misshapes, there was also a mid-30s couple, the type who had probably done coke at parties without ever being regular users, who worked some sorta pirate sideshow?

Anyway I got the sense they were the kind of people who would’ve been swingers in 1988 and into hotwifing in 2008 and free use in 2018, not even in it to get laid themselves so much as that they both think that people who pull a lot of strange are hot and they want to date someone like that

I do remember one college party in like 2003 where as things wound down a guy was hitting on my girlfriend and honestly I think it would’ve been best and validating right then if she went home with him and maybe she would’ve if I wasn’t right there, and this was at the point when I and others were at least aware of polyamory but even among sex weirdos as a weirdo thing, and I wished we had talked it out before

Trying to put this across after the fact was awkward and I’m not sure how much the angles of it where she saw alignment in us were even the same where I did

(so meta-alignment I guess)

I have, unironically, been saying that someone should note that the Bill Paxton’s Ass Extravaganza coincided with an uptick in honest-to-god interest in nonmonogamy and baugruppe-style multi-family compounds

If a woman is going out with a lot of men, there are a lot of chances to become acquainted with different sorts of men. In this way she may find out that most of her boyfriends are jerks and then find new boyfriends who are nicer.

Frank reinvents polyamory

I’m just imagining Homestuck’s fanfic “Frank Invents a New Game With Several Variations on the Theme of ‘Polyamory: The Sequel’”

Polyamory 2

You know, I first knew polyamorists from the New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom in the mid-90s, and watching how that’s all progressed the cultural normalization and inclusion of queerness really did, as predicted, lead to straight relationship norms (on subjects like the expectation of sexual exclusivity) shifting to more closely track gay ones

Retrospectively, unsurprisingly but unheralded, it really was mostly bisexuals first bridging the gap

7/14/2014 Toady One Slightly changed the way dwarves enter into romantic relationships.  Individual dwarfs are now assigned a desirability rating determined by the total point value of all skill levels learned, value of items in possession, and quality of desirable physical traits (which are different for each civilization and determined at world creation.)  Matching was supposed to work by assigning dwarfs to partners with similar ratings, but due to a small oversight they were continuously entering into relationships until the combined rating of all partners equaled their own.  This created problems when the king arrived and quickly appropriated a large amount of wealth, dramatically increasing his desirability rating and causing all the female dwarves to leave their partners for him.  The resulting negative thoughts created by the loss of partners plus the inability to find new ones lead to a number of violent rampages, eventually causing the collapse of the fortress.
