As a pair of fear and loathing objects, both “the blac bloc antifa” (anonymous collectivity, coming from and returning to shelter in community structures) AND “the lone wolf shooter” (expensively equipped individual acting autonomously but in line with shared ethos, then discarded) are such perfect synecdoches of leftism and rightism tho

antoine-roquentin:

it’s always interesting to watch people complain that attendees of universities and private schools that feed into them get the unvarnished truth about their nation’s history of atrocities as a way of proving that any anti-nationalist thought actually comes from the rich as a plot to undermine the nation. in reality, if you’re trying to maintain hegemony, you want to teach the most shuttered pro-nationalist views to the poor to indoctrinate them into nationalism. the rich require space for critical thought to perform the functions of academia, reproducing and imposing social order, and you can be sure they won’t revolt because of the benefits they gain from this order. of course, american universities are becoming proletarianized to a degree because companies don’t want to pay to train their employees, which is likely the driving force behind campus protest since the 60s. consequently this can also read as a freakout over the lack of separation between the parts of universities that serve the rich and those that distribute increasingly specialized skills needed for employment in a modern economy to upwardly mobile members of the working class.

Are you just learning about Larry Householder following his arrest? Those in Ohio political circles know all about him.

quoms:

Sad to watch this article just gloss over the LBJ comparison since “take large amounts of corporate money, put it in a slush fund, then distribute it to candidates to create a network of people who are personally loyal to you” is literally how Lyndon Johnson became president of the United States

In retrospect, the fact that it was a meme for a good five years that none of us knew what was going to happen in the year 2020 seems oddly prescient.

“haha sorry I don’t have 2020 vision” none of us did :(

Don’t get me wrong—she was strong, and certainly not a waif, but more than almost any other female superhero actress I’ve ever seen, Lucy Lawless exuded physical power and weight that I actually believed (when she wasn’t somersaulting in front of a ridiculous greenscreen).

that’s a damn good point

EVERYTHING. ALL OF IT. I DON’T KNOW I’M JUST FEELING EXCEPTIONALLY WARM RIGHT NOW.

I LOVE HER

as glum said she also manifests muscle mass purely through acting prowess, somehow she suggests immense weight in every movement.

you did it! you broke top/bottom discourse down to its essential components!

god I don’t remember who but I remember someone at some point commenting that the reason half-joking celebrity thirst comments tended to be like “I want X to sit on my face/rail me/step on me/etc.” was because that sort of comment was interpreted as creepy or predatory unless the sex act was coded as submissive and framed the other party as the agent, and that was one of those things that really Made Me Think, as they say

The Little Mermaid is serious science fiction, apparently.

You know The Little Mermaid is serious science fiction because it’s about a daring young xenoanthropologist whose radical theories about alien cultures put her at odds with the reactionary isolationism of her society’s ruling class. Having a dude who’s literally just a fish is a bonus.

me: Stop.

my brain: Listen. It’s a simple, legitimate question. When Trump’s speeches get translated into Japanese, what first-person pronoun do you think they use?

me: They don’t have to, first-person pronouns are entirely unnecessary in Japanese most of the time

my brain: but not always, right? So that leaves you with a tricky situation, doesn’t it? Do you stick to the supposed formality of the situation with something like ‘ware?’ Or do you convey Trump’s tone with–

me: WE ARE NOT FANSUBBING TRUMP SPEECHES YOU RAT BASTARD

my brain: TRUMP WOULD SAY ORE-SAMA AND YOU CAN’T PROVE ME WRONG

antoine-roquentin:

i got to reading about packwood because i’d been reading about the current speaker of the canadian house of commons (and justin trudeau’s good friend), geoff regan, and his father, gerald regan, former premier of nova scotia, minister of status of women, and a rather prolific serial rapist. when regan was found innocent on charges of assaulting an 18 year old and a 14 year old thanks to the work of defense lawyer edward greenspan (MPP Jagmeet Singh reflected on Greenspan’s career in fighting for “societies marginalized” as being an inspiration), a publication ban was lifted on other allegations against him, which ended up totaling over 40 women. new allegations have come out virtually every time he ends up in the news doing anything (and given he’s on the board of corporations and has a hand in liberal party politics, that’s often). journalist stephen kimber, who wrote a book on the guy, says he got communications from another dozen women after regan died 5 months ago.

apparently regan would drive his car around in the 1950s and look for young, small women that he could overpower and offer them rides home. given the sheer number of accusations, he probably did this hundreds of times. it’s yet another reflection of how the combination of mass car ownership among men and the construction of the interstate highway system resulted in the explosive rise in serial killings between the 50s and the 80s. adult men had cars while young women didn’t, and cities were increasingly built so only car owners could get around. even today, secluded highways tend to be killing fields for women too poor to own vehicles, especially when oil and gas fields, mines, or logging camps are nearby.
