So the entire field of vision corrective surgery goes back to this one Russian boy who fell down playing soccer and broke his glasses so they cut up his eyes. And they called in like the best eye doctors in the USSR and when he recovered he didn’t need glasses anymore

And Russian doctors looked back and there were some prewar Japanese (major medical and optical researchers!) papers suggesting this

And they were like “what if we start slicing up eyeballs”
