You would be the first to admit that Big Capitalism is not America’s religion, but it is a dominant force in the country. And I think Christmas is more capitalist than it is religion. So 2/1/1

Yeah, the draining religious content is an interesting synecdoche for the national culture here (Pilgrims giving thanks used to bear religious overtones!)

Wait, it's fucking Purim? I thought I'd just been getting drunk for nothing today. Blessed be Mordechai, cursed be Haman!

when i was a child my dad made up a fake holiday called big sandwich night the weekend after thanksgiving, during which we got the longest bread we could find and built a big sandwich together and then cut it up and ate it. we got really fancy ingredients and each built our own section of sandwich before cutting it. building the sandwich together represents community or teamwork or something. and then we would put our christmas tree up and the holiday season was officially kicked off with big sandwich night.

i grew up believing this was a real holiday that americans everywhere celebrated until when i was like 8 i asked a friend if they were excited for big sandwich night and they were like what the hell are you talking about riley. kind of shattered my worldview. but we still celebrate it and ive spread the tradition to friends and partners.

big sandwiches of years past:

as weve included more people weve started having to graft loaves together to make a sandwich big enough for everyone. but it still communicates the core idea of everyone eating the same sandwich together in fellowship.

This is a good holiday tradition.

Northern East Coast American Golden Age nostalgia fest. There is always snow at Christmas, but not too much and it isn’t that cold out, really.

Also this “Golden Age” is exactly like 7 years of the late 50s. For white people. Who had money.

And were America.

(It was the “Camelot” early 60s, too. And the now-“Rust Belt” through Chicago to Minneapolis.)

Exactly. (“A Charlie Brown Christmas” was 1965)

both the Christmas songs i remember hearing in supermarkets so far, bearing in mind it is still November, even if we are in Advent, and wanting to get out are ex-Beatles Christmas money spinners

we are not the same

Yeah, original Christmas music these days is cash-in stuff to get some easy sales and maybe airplay in December from people looking for something, anything new. People forget there was a Taylor Swift Christmas EP in 2007. (With an original “Jesus is the Reason For the Season” War on Christmas song!)

I wonder if Christmas being seen as a 40′s - 50′s thing will get replaced with it being an 80′s thing. At least when it comes to Christmas movies since there’s a bunch from that era that are considered classics and it does have fairly well off people.

Gremlins, Die Hard, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Home Alone in ‘90… I could see it.
