I genuinely want to know, what the hell is wrong with you? your brand seems to be "I'm very cool for being an uncaring jackass who thinks cruelty is good". you had a whole post whining about how people didn't make fun of moms whose kids had died anymore, you think the Irish and the Uighurs deserve what's being done to them, god knows what other fucked up shit goes on in that fucked up head of yours. so what's your deal? why are you like this?

1) Used to be severely inhibited, crafted a consciously devil-may-care ideology to draw on as a counterbalance

2) Precociously reverse-engineered and internalized 70s and 80s media and its post-68 ethos around risk and autonomy and violence as a child, was promised the victory of that but saw the stirrings of helicopter parent safetyism, loathe that “family values” caring-for-humans-just-cuz! thing as a fetish of the mediocre and forgettable to which they will sacrifice things of real value if given the chance

3) Realized that carelords eclipsing the edgy has made this generation of internet culture distinctively worse, doing my part to bring back the old ways

4) Grew up being taken to Catholic Mass every week, guess it sunk in that there’s real power in accepting suffering and death

5) However ended up with a pagan sensibility, think that force is an entirely reasonable basis for hierarchy

6) Realized once in like 3rd grade that if I avoided pain people could manipulate me with it, instead assigned it positive value

what’s your strangest belief that doesn’t intersect (except in the most generous hot take way that anything can) with politics/culture war type stuff?

I think Fermi’s paradox is ‘cause advanced species tend to evolve into an economy, from there into math, and their final form is omnipresent as things like the speed of light or the gravitational constant

What's with the 90's fixation?

It’s the world I grew up in and expected to inherit and now all I can do is memorialize it so it’s not lost forever

The Man of the Future (1939) - A photo of the 21st century man published in the February 1, 1939 issue of Vogue magazine.

The man of the next century will revolt against shaving and wear a beautiful beard…His hat will be an antennae - snatching radio out of the ether. His socks disposable, his suit minus tie collar and buttons.

also me: okay now I dare you to track the development of “spring break” itself as a professional-class intoxicated sex vacation

me: Ft. Lauderdale in the ‘80s, yeah, but you know an interesting thing was how this spirit of “spring break” combined with the rise of the t-shirt from beach souvenir origins, giving us the “Big Johnson”, “Coed Naked”, etc. brands

also me:

me: see the real edgy thing would be to ask me to track it in Burning Man and music festivals

also me:

me: and the thing to look at there was Woodstock '94, and how it foregrounded the “hippie spirit” of the original while shedding any sense of the activist imperative and social purpose that even the 80s had with Live Aid and Farm Aid

I wonder if it’s possible to write a successful Anti-Rocky-Horror-Picture-Show.

Not, like, a homophobia fascism thing! an awesome order and anchoring thing!

Is it possible for such a thing to exist?

Sparkly gay patriotic traditionalism?

Not specifically or primarily gay traditionalism but I think you may get the idea.

(Also not specifically patriotic, but you may…)

This got me thinking.

I could definitely see something where… Brad and Janet, instead of being striaght-laced suburban prudes, are hipsterish, aimless urbanites, whose most outstanding flaw is not their naivete or their uptightness but their casual nihilism, their “lol nothing matters”, and its attendant lack of fire-in-the-belly.

and in the place of Dr.Frank-N-Furter there would be some sort of… Half-Mad but Terribly Earnest Knight, or a Fatherly, Jovial Barbarian King. Someone who represented traditionalism not as something “Miserable but Good For You”, forced down upon you by the powers-that-be, but traditionalism as… the opportunity to shed the malaise of modernist meaninglessness. (in the same sense that Dr.F-N-F’s hedonism was the opportunity to shed hypocritical notions of propriety) Not “you must believe, or else”, but “look, here is something worth believing in, if you dare to.”

and instead of a hidden castle full of hedonists, it would be… something like the secret meeting place of a knightly order.

Maybe the motif of combat in place of the motif of sex. Confronting the modern man’s overwhelming fear of physical pain, and introducing him to something he never thought he could feel– the thrill of battle.

(Fight-a-fight-a-fight-a-fight me! I wanna be bloody!)

Am I…. hitting the right notes here?
