I saw Garbage at the Electric Factory in Philly on the Version 2.0 tour. Shirley was in a sling from a breast biopsy (on tour!) and she was still a fucking ball of energy.

In contrast I remember The Cranberries canceling, and then learning they actually cancel a lot, and then Dolores O'Riordan died unexpectedly the other year and I noticed no one really brought up how she was a ‘90s rock star who sang about heroin and then missed a lot of shows for health reasons

Butch Vig was likely the one thinking to cover Big Star in the first place. Vic Chesnutt too, maybe The Jam, though I could see that being Steve or Shirley.

Just woke up at 7 in the damn morning with the knowledge that my stand would be called Bullet Train From Tokyo To Los Angeles

Heard Supervixen for the first time since the personality change and was thrown when it didn’t segue into the “duh-duh-duh-daa-da” of Queer. Still got it.

The Nellee Hooper remix of #1 Crush used in Romeo + Juliet and on the radio was significantly better than the (good!) original B-Side on the Vow(/Subhuman!) single.

Once they were in swing Garbage released most of their singles as two U.K. editions with a different B-side and 2 remixes each

Thinking about how Garbage was totally doing a thing where the self-titled debut was gonna be “the pink album” and Version 2.0 was “the orange album”

My going from Garbage to CHVRCHES fandom was totally a matter of going from wanting my heavily produced electro-loop-rock to have vocals by an older, more experienced to a younger, fresher Scottish woman as I aged, wasn’t it?

Oh man I had Shirley Manson photos from SPIN up in my locker from middle school until at least 11th grade.

Garbage had two AMAZING albums that were the best music you could ask for to be 13 to. The b-sides up until the middle of 2.0 could’ve been a perfect third album in their own right. (For weird British reasons, each single would have two versions with one or two b-sides and two remixes on each, so that’s a lot). Even the later 2.0 b-sides – I mean, Tornado and 13X Forever were at least fun.

The third and fourth albums were crap. I think the thing was the boys didn’t have any fresh ideas, and Shirley – Shirley was clear in interviews how much she looked up to Chrissie Hynde and Siouxie Sioux and, uh, some names I can’t remember drunk in 2013 – and she stopped writing songs about what it was like to be a teenager listening to those songs and started trying to imitate them directly. And they all had brassy singing voices and she has a breathy voice, and so all the singles were kind of half-assed performances of half-assed arrangements of half-assed takeoffs from Top of the Pops circa 1987? And wow was the filler filler.

This honestly sounds like the second disc of 2.0 which I really wish they’d done instead.

Oh god this was such perfect music to be 14 to.

The first two Garbage albums and the b-sides up to say Tornado and 13X Forever are easily the equal of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. Add The Aeroplane Flies High and it’s a wobbler.
