been in the states with my friend for a couple days and i am having SUCH a good time but i can’t play dwarf fortress until i get back home and i am plagued with visions of dwarves. i need them back i need to micromanage those little fucks

If you want to play Dwarf Fortress without having to micromanage their individual behavior, there’s the online mode! You control all the dwarves at once, but they all run their own little separate instances of the game, and if you turn too much in one direction they might fall over.

Hopefully the additional devs will continue to improve polish, performance, and bug fixing, while Toady One can keep doing what he does.

Yet even in this excitement, I shudder to imagine the sanity damage that the Kitfox Games’ devs may have suffered from years of exposure to this game’s code base.

Engraved here is a rendition of an image of the Dwarf Fortress learning curve. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It depicts an obsidian overhang which menaces with spikes of obsidian and tears. Carved on the overhang is an image of Toady One and the players. The players are curled up in a fetal position. Toady One is laughing. The players are burning.

7/14/2014 Toady One Slightly changed the way dwarves enter into romantic relationships.  Individual dwarfs are now assigned a desirability rating determined by the total point value of all skill levels learned, value of items in possession, and quality of desirable physical traits (which are different for each civilization and determined at world creation.)  Matching was supposed to work by assigning dwarfs to partners with similar ratings, but due to a small oversight they were continuously entering into relationships until the combined rating of all partners equaled their own.  This created problems when the king arrived and quickly appropriated a large amount of wealth, dramatically increasing his desirability rating and causing all the female dwarves to leave their partners for him.  The resulting negative thoughts created by the loss of partners plus the inability to find new ones lead to a number of violent rampages, eventually causing the collapse of the fortress.

there’s a new version of dwarf fortress out and that means new bug reports:

• Humans die of old age only after the end of world generation; corpses lie around town

• If an adventurer shouts and nobody is around to hear it, the game crashes

• Minotaur strangles dwarf under water for three months and counting with no end in sight

• War Dogs appear to run from themselves in terror

• All clothes in cabinets of Dwarven Fortress are too large for dwarves

• Creatures spawn covered in tears

• Zombies start conversation with necromancer adventurer who tries to sleep in their house

• Adventurer yelled “Yield!” at boss, was presented with option to yield to himself

• New tree generation frequently causes birds to explode
