In retrospect Garbage took the role of being a band for adolescents so seriously and I respect them so much for it

Hm, I should at least listen to the Butch Vig Sonic Youth albums
This thought courtesy of listening to Siamese Dream and going “holy shit, this is thirty years old”
Butch Vig was likely the one thinking to cover Big Star in the first place. Vic Chesnutt too, maybe The Jam, though I could see that being Steve or Shirley.
Nevermind, Gish, Siamese Dream, the Garbage stuff, 2 Sonic Youth albums, 1 L7 and, uh, House of Pain’s “Shamrocks and Shenanigans”, the mid-90s substantially sounded like Butch Vig’s production. His use of massively multitracked overdubbing really bears comparisons to Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound”.
He’s mentioned that House of Pain was basically the label saying “you’re the Nevermind guy!” and offering enough money for what made no sense as an artistic decision

Asian immigrants’ kid sent to piano lessons turned into a Stanford-educated Detroit programmer with a face like that, yeah, Vienna Teng was exactly the person who was gonna compose a rationalist hymn about containerized transport, wasn’t she?
“Oh, you’re not gonna mention the Celtic guy she was featuring on the back half as a favor/to help put him over?”
NO!
I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan and do I ever acknowledge Ed Sheeran?
Also, the rest of her stuff was music for people who thought electronica was a thing, sub-Sneaker Pimps stuff
like it is totally an artifact of growing up loving Butch Vig’s band that I’m such a picky bitch like this
Oh Jesus, I just realized that before when I tried to listen to the Taylor’s Version Red my phone speakers were just blown out in ways that washed out a lot of the subtlety into crap
I mean, this makes Butch Vig mixing Nevermind for car speakers still relevant, with more nuance
