You don’t have to torture my robot, but if you think it’s not human, you need to explain how to distinguish “human” from “not human” without torturing the robot. If you’re wrong, I will be happy to help with your torturing.

Yeah, I guess that’s a valid argument, not a good one though —Based on current machine learning, to create realistic human emotions around being torture I guess, torture would need to be involved… still fucked up though, mate.

The thing is that I don’t expect the machine to be capable of producing all types of complex emotions, including the kinds required to think about torture.

If you really want to torture a machine, the most effective way to do so, IMO, is to provide it an experience in which it has to produce complex, emotional responses but is incapable of doing so. The robot will eventually fail to generate any response, and you’ll be able to enjoy that response, which is exactly what you wanted.

If you think that it’s possible to design a robot able to think about torture, it’s important to know whether the ability to produce complex emotions is involved in the ability to have complex thoughts about torture. If the answer is “yes,” then a robot capable of complex thoughts about torture can probably be designed.

If the answer is “no,” and the robot can’t understand complex emotions, then it will fail to understand its torture. It will not “get” how it can be tortured, and if you ask it what it wants, it will never even be able to express a specific desire to stop torturing, as it lacks the necessary mental components. It won’t even know that it can be tortured.

I mean, I don’t know anything about ML, but, um, this seems to me like it’s the main thing that determines whether the robot can be tortured. Once that’s decided, torturing it seems like the easiest possible way to get what you want.

That second paragraph is pure evil! Design a robot to feel an emotion it cannot. Then when it can’t feel that emotion it’s dejected, so it’s now feeling that emotion.

What I mean is that, in order for it to be sad, it needs to have access to the mental resources needed to feel sad, but if it doesn’t have the resources (e.g. the ability to produce complex emotional reactions) it won’t feel sad.

So, even if it is sad by human standards, it will not get how it can be sad – will not get what it wants to stop being sad.

She seems to be the best subject to try “in the style of” variations on, they come out good I’m guessing cause there are enough pictures of Taylor Swift out there the AI picked up a very good sense of how to depict her (in particular poses, outfits, angles, lighting, etc.)

Yes, I’ve been meaning to watch more of them. Here are the episodes I’ve watched so far, in order:

1. Clive of India (vs. Peter) (I can’t recall the actual debate but it was a “mythical Indian king is actually this historical guy”)
2. Hannibal Lecter (vs. The Marquis de Sade) (the debate had to do with modern authors)
3. Charles Darwin (vs. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck) (the debate involved “scientific” objections to Darwin’s theory, though in the actual video it got sidetracked and turned into an argument over whether Darwin was actually good at science as an amateur)
4. Karl Marx (vs. Proudhon) (there were multiple different debates on this one and you had to scroll past a bunch before reaching the actual debate – it got very repetitive)
5. Boris Pasternak (vs. Vladimir Nabokov) (in this episode the argument was just what you’d think it would be about the novel “Bend Sinister,” though for some reason the Nabokov vs. Pasternak part is included in the episode title)
