“a year since the partisan street fighting started, the only ultra-right boy army holding together is VICE founder/grumpy skateboard dad Gavin McInnes’ vanity project” is one of those true-in-2018 things would be both more dismissible AND more blankly accepted in 2008

“Now More Than Ever”

On the one hand I’m kind of surprised the New Yorker would run a 1984 of the viper cult

On the other hand it’s within the bounds of reason Zadie Smith would write a 1984 of the viper cult, and given that, the New Yorker is where it would run

Anonymous asked: What's your take on ryan w bounds of oregon being rejected as judicial nominee by dems and then republicans for writing a dems r the real racists article decades ago

There’s still an if not a Rockefeller or even Kempist at least old money cuck caucus still in the Republicans; Roy Moore probably would have won except it affwonted Cory Gardner’s pwecious dignity too much to put money into campaign ads, same as with Todd Akin and Christine O’Donnell. The next few cycles should take care of them though.

big-block-of-cheese-day:

While writing the play [“Straight White Men”] in 2014, Lee ended up interviewing dozens of straight white men and relying on a workshop of diverse college students. She asked them to vent about straight white men — and then asked them how they would like straight white men to behave. “Everyone at the workshop was like: ‘I want a straight white man to sit down and shut up. I want him to take a back seat, to take a supporting role. I don’t want him to be aggressive,’ ” she recalled. “ ‘I want him to listen. I don’t want him taking the head role or the biggest job or to be going after the biggest stuff. I want him in a supporting role to me.’ ”

But when she created a character according to these specifications, she was shocked to find that the workshop participants hated him. “I realized that the reason they hated him was — despite all their commitment to social justice — what they believed in most was not being a loser.”

This is my favorite political cartoon now

this is sort of true actually

hate speech isn’t covered by the constitution

Seriously, though, we need to eliminate hate speech from protected free speech.

Then that defeats the purpose of free speech. Golly you guys aren’t that bright

According to the supreme court it is covered by the constitution. Also, the fact that you think that there’s no “hate speech” coming from the left is really telling.

no they’re right, everyone should be allowed to say whatever they want, except sometimes

“They Killed Your Wife”

Wasn’t thinking of that angle but ok

channers have gotten really good at melodrama, all the SCP stuff for one but also all those greentext/copypasta stories that were really moving until you got to the last line and they were backstories for nonsense pop lyrics

this made me cry and I grew up longing for liberation but they haven’t made me cry in a hot minute, maybe get on that if you know what’s good for you

Managed to break my laptop and phone in the same week and my repair guys changed their hours so spent the weekend (Fri nite-Mon aft) without Internet or any means of contact

(I guess the PS4)

It was maddening at first but grew liberating to live like 1993. Read a few years‘ pile of n+1. And wow, daily cycle internet had forgot me about good writing! That Brooklyn-dwelling left-aligned media could be complex and intellectual rather than viperous and partisan. Like, there was a collection of short stories and it was actually good! Trevor Shikaze’s Beast Leave was amazing, hitting its literary fiction marks while being a fucking hilarious absurd gore slapstick episode of The Office. The editing, too! Callbacks and rhymes spreading over different articles of completely different formats and subjects across the whole issue!

Also I got a (pedal) bike again recently and got around a bit, an area near my place I had hoped would turn into something is seeing more energy, saw some nice yards and houses as inspiration

So am I gonna seize on these insights and cut the internet’s hold on my life? Probably not, ignoring the world to chase a private bliss still just seems like a bad idea. (Though, “withdraw to your pleasures, reconstitute later” might be the best way to starve a spoilt discourse of fuel). Vacations, maybe

Democrats are losing the millennial vote and need to change message | Cas Mudde | Opinion | The Guardian

Today, as many white millennials support the Democrats as the Republicans (each 39%). Just two years ago, Democrats still had a 14% lead over Republicans among white millennials. The trends are even more pronounced among white male millennials. Today, this group favors the Republicans over the Democrats by a staggering 11%. In 2016, Democrats led white male millennials by 12%.

So between the border separation and Kennedy’s retirement, you’ve frenzied the left just before kicking off a once-in-a-generation existential fight in an environment where the GOP midterm strategy increasingly looks like luring them into overreaction and then running against them

The whole point of the center-left party for donors is “We can negotiate a peace that gets you most of what you want and keeps everything quiet“ so center-left politicians have to freak out about civility in a way that right ones do not.  The double standard isn’t just a media thing, it reflects the political reality and I believe the dem politicians themselves are the source of it, not the media.

Depressed about the state of America

I mean, like everyone, but specifically focused on what’s truly important – my own righteous self-pity

The culture‘s dying, and once it goes threatens to rise as a devouring zombie

And it’s true the miracle cures on offer seem to work largely by infusing it with the power of a rampaging brute instead

(even if the ones pounding that fact hardest DO exhibit some worrying bite marks and a bouquet of rotting flesh)

And I accept that I’m not particularly likely to save it with my brilliant insights, and I guess the time-tested advice would be to turn inward, draw the circle of world you invest your identity in tighter, focus on your hobbies, the small things you can do with your personal skills to make the world better, make your social circle a good society to inhabit in its own right and maybe you can regrow from there

But I mean, American culture, and specifically a narrative of American culture that leads, in however contingently path-bound and non-Whiggishly-inevitable a manner, to the ‘90s synthesis – “bourgeois bohemian” values, spirit of ‘68 tempered by lessons of the ‘70s, 20th century mass pop culture as the new canon binding society together – that IS my hobby, and skill, and a good share of my social circle, so 🤷‍♂️
