channers have gotten really good at melodrama, all the SCP stuff for one but also all those greentext/copypasta stories that were really moving until you got to the last line and they were backstories for nonsense pop lyrics

Managed to break my laptop and phone in the same week and my repair guys changed their hours so spent the weekend (Fri nite-Mon aft) without Internet or any means of contact

It was maddening at first but grew liberating to live like 1993. Read a few years‘ pile of n+1. And wow, daily cycle internet had forgot me about good writing! That Brooklyn-dwelling left-aligned media could be complex and intellectual rather than viperous and partisan. Like, there was a collection of short stories and it was actually good! Trevor Shikaze’s Beast Leave was amazing, hitting its literary fiction marks while being a fucking hilarious absurd gore slapstick episode of The Office. The editing, too! Callbacks and rhymes spreading over different articles of completely different formats and subjects across the whole issue!

Also I got a (pedal) bike again recently and got around a bit, an area near my place I had hoped would turn into something is seeing more energy, saw some nice yards and houses as inspiration

So am I gonna seize on these insights and cut the internet’s hold on my life? Probably not, ignoring the world to chase a private bliss still just seems like a bad idea. (Though, “withdraw to your pleasures, reconstitute later” might be the best way to starve a spoilt discourse of fuel). Vacations, maybe

The whole point of the center-left party for donors is “We can negotiate a peace that gets you most of what you want and keeps everything quiet“ so center-left politicians have to freak out about civility in a way that right ones do not.  The double standard isn’t just a media thing, it reflects the political reality and I believe the dem politicians themselves are the source of it, not the media.

Depressed about the state of America

I mean, like everyone, but specifically focused on what’s truly important – my own righteous self-pity

The culture‘s dying, and once it goes threatens to rise as a devouring zombie

And it’s true the miracle cures on offer seem to work largely by infusing it with the power of a rampaging brute instead

(even if the ones pounding that fact hardest DO exhibit some worrying bite marks and a bouquet of rotting flesh)

And I accept that I’m not particularly likely to save it with my brilliant insights, and I guess the time-tested advice would be to turn inward, draw the circle of world you invest your identity in tighter, focus on your hobbies, the small things you can do with your personal skills to make the world better, make your social circle a good society to inhabit in its own right and maybe you can regrow from there

But I mean, American culture, and specifically a narrative of American culture that leads, in however contingently path-bound and non-Whiggishly-inevitable a manner, to the ‘90s synthesis – “bourgeois bohemian” values, spirit of ‘68 tempered by lessons of the ‘70s, 20th century mass pop culture as the new canon binding society together – that IS my hobby, and skill, and a good share of my social circle, so 🤷‍♂️
