When I lived in LA, Devendra Banhart once - this was when he was dating Natalie Portman - threw a party in a warehouse in that district that was still in the process of turning into lofts, somewhere roughly between the American Apparel factory and the Little Radio warehouse. The announcement said to “come dressed as the concept of love”, and I was like hell, I still have these leopard print phat pants I sewed for my high school graduation project and this Ryo-Ohki backpack I can fill with Jolly Ranchers, I’ll get some glowsticks, let’s candyraver it up, this’ll be fun.
And I got down there and parked my car and like, no one else was dressed up at all, at least not any different than everyday Echo Park hipster fucks, and it was like shit, I look goddamn ridiculous. And so I was like “you know what, the only option is to fucking own this”. So I went around smiling and offering people the Jolly Ranchers, and I was surprised both by how many people would and how many people wouldn’t take candy from a stranger.
