Not entirely sure but I think this may be a religious panic, Obama was not hindi. Sure he may have been a secret muslim, but not hindu.
Varadkar was raised Catholic. It might be a panic over non-Christians as premiers, but even if that is what it is, it’s still a race thing, obviously - obviously, there are Christians in India, both converts since British colonialism as well as native Thomasites, who trace their own origin to the missionary work of the apostle Thomas the Doubter, so you can’t tell from looking at them that none of these men are Christian. If they are reaching for religion, it is only religion as an extremely poor disguise for racism.
Think it’s the shift to a more conspiratorial racism as opposed to the IQ-and-skull shape racism. Not really a clean separation between those though.
