Something maybe obvious to others but a tweet yesterday really clarified for me is that the thing with the weird excerpts we’ve seen from the Barbie movie – Ken’s job and idiom of male status competition being “beach”, his having a sense that after a good date a man would sleep over at the woman’s house but no idea why – isn’t that the characters are vapid, it’s that these are Barbies as being played with by little girls, who don’t really understand the adult world they’re burlesquing.
