That can mean you're ahead of the curve, or it can mean you got sidetracked and are looking at something irrelevant, a small group of weirdos. I've had much the same thoughts about furries - cartoon animals fucking treated as normal without object- nor meta-level wink wink "isn't this weird?" lampshading, furbait vidya aimed at horny teenagers being the future, etc. but I don't think it's going to be _real_, y'know?
