If your \u201cworkplace democracy\u201d is any kind of democracy at all, your \u201cworkers\u201d are not in the least going to get to elect whoever they want for the positions of management and owner. They will not have a say in how decisions are made. Even if they could have a voice, it\u2019s certainly not going to be equal. There will always be more of one class than the other, and that class will always be given an unearned advantage. That\u2019s just the nature of the \u201cmajority\u201d system \u2013 it is a system designed for the \u201cmajority.\u201d

\u201cWorker control\u201d is the phrase for \u201cpeople who are members of some category saying what things they think are good for them. This is a different concept, in that it is a category about people, rather than “things\u201d or \u201cgoals\u201d like \u201cworker control\u201d is. You can\u2019t have control over \u201cthings\u201d or \u201cgoals,\u201d because there are none. It\u2019s all about people \u2013 what is good for them.

This guy is actually a \u201cworker\u201d (\u201claborer,\u201d in his own term) in a certain sense, and he\u2019s doing his best as a \u201cworker,\u201d but he does want to take charge, he wants to do things his way, he doesn\u2019t think about how other people want to do things. He is a true believer in \u201cworker control.\u201d

The thing to do when people who say that are coming at you with \u201cworker control\u201d is to remember that it is only a phrase that we give it. That phrase is only part of what we are dealing with, because when we say it, we immediately say what it should be. This guy wants \u201cworker control\u201d in the sense that he wants workers to have some power, that he wants workers to have some say in decisions. We are not speaking about \u201cworker control\u201d in some neutral or apolitical way. We are speaking about \u201cworker control.\u201d

Which is an oxymoron. It cannot be. No \u201cworker control\u201d can be true to its name when one \u201cworker\u201d thinks \u201cworker control\u201d is about how people do things, and the other one thinks \u201cworker control\u201d is about people being in charge. Worker control can only be true if it is about a few people having power over many. If your system is \u201cthe worker\u201d versus \u201cthe others,\u201d then it is a system where \u201cthe worker\u201d will have the power to do as they please, and it will be a system of \u201cworkers.\u201d

So when you\u2019re thinking about it in terms of \u201cworker control,\u201d remember that when you use that phrase, you\u2019re already thinking in terms of \u201cworker\u201d vs \u201cothers.\u201d

What is true is this: most people (including me) say \u201cworker control.\u201d That\u2019s what you say when you say \u201cworker control.\u201d But when a few people really mean \u201cworker control,\u201d what they mean is this:
