I\u2019m no football fan, but it sounds like what happened here was commotio cordis, i.e. getting thumped in the chest at precisely the wrong instant such that it induces cardiac arrest. It can potentially happen in basically any sport and is unlikely enough that it\u2019s essentially a freak accident. This isn\u2019t the same thing as the concussions and subconcussive hits inducing CTE that are plaguing football at the moment, and I don\u2019t think people should update much on it.
