The best defense I have heard is that, “to each his own.” So, if you want to write something that is “deep” or “edgy” or “thought-provoking,” it is fine to do so. However, if you write something that is not something you yourself would ever do, then you can rest assured that it is not a good thing, it is simply “bad art.”
“To each his own” is a great defense because to every person it is perfectly true.
