They taught us hesitation words the very first day of Japanese, because sections were in the language and “uhhh” was a lot of what we were saying for a while.
This was MWF lectures and daily sections for just 5 credits (rule of thumb was 1 per regular weekly meeting, which would’ve been 8, though after freshman year it split into 4 sections/2 lectures speaking for 4 credits and 1/1 writing for 2) AND two hours in the language lab speaking along with tapes every day
The flip side was after two years you’d been taught, grammatically and structurally, the entire Japanese language, past that it was just vocabulary and idiom and more complex practice
