Have thought for a while that my house, or rather estate, should have a name, have settled on Karafuto, which was the Japanese province on the south of the island of Sakhalin, at about Portland latitude

The Japanese name Karafuto comes from Ainu kamuy kar put ya mosir(Ainu : カムィ・カㇻ・プッ・ヤ・モシㇼ) which means “the island a god has created on the estuary (of Amur River)”.[citation needed] It was formerly known as Kita Ezo, meaning Northern Ezo
