Here’s my favourite anecdote about Plato. He advertised a lecture on the Good. Everyone assumed it would contain his advice on living a good life, so everyone in Athens with any interest in philosophy showed up. But the only thing that anyone recorded about it was that from the moment Plato began speaking, nobody knew what the hell he was talking about. Now we can only guess at what the lecture might have been about.
