Thinking that as a YIMBYist “they froze urban housing in the 70s, we’ve gotta break the freeze!” catches on there’ll be more hooks for a “they froze the structure of social relations in the 80s!” parallel, that just like as the cities started to empty yuppie “preservationists” pushed back efforts to update them with “Manhattanizing” density and reigned as self-satisfied lords of their obsolete netherworld for decades but now we gotta move on and build the towers they didn’t, the “family values”, nesting nuclear family in-home artisanal childraising thing was similarly a push-back on contemporary “open marriage”, swinging, latchkey “it’s 10 o'clock, do you know where your” childraising trends towards post-familiism that we’ve got to renew because we’ve hit the limits of the retro structures the 70s yuppies took us back to.
(what are you going to say, that nuclear family parenting must be defended because it’s necessary to the continuation of our society and culture? Look at the population numbers, it already doesn’t satisfy that end!)
I also wonder if there’s space for an elite/nonelite cleavage there – like, sure they got to live in artist lofts, the price was you had to live in a soulless suburb, sure they got to take the city back from crack gangs (effectively unparented kids forming into fraternal bands with territory and an economic basis… that was post-familism) you had to live under church ladies, etc.
