Of course it turns out that she eventually find \u201cshortcuts\u201d with less distance than a direct route.</p></blockquote>\n\n<p>In Los Angeles, everyone carried a <a href=\"https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Guide\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Guide</a> in their car \u2013 a ring-bound book of maps with streets alphabetically listed in an index (also, street numbers were a consistent coordinate grid). Otherwise you&rsquo;d just learn the main travel roads in your area (state highways, Main Street, arterials, etc.) and people would just give directions for the last bit from there.</p>"}
