I think the narrative Dead Girl (Laura Palmer, Alice Palmer, Abigail Hobbs etc) can be compared to a whale fall in the way that, had she not died and sunk and began to rot in the center of the story, there would be no story at all.

She dies to feed everything else. And while she’s alive, she knows she’s too heavy to be mourned and forgotten. She knows she’s meat for other things and carries the weight of her own grave.
