Think a lot of the dynamic with the last decade was mass internet adoption favored rhetorical appeals (which can be repeated and multiplied indefinitely with no cost; contrast patronage machines – everyone can’t be a garbage man), sentiment and emotion, required approval by fewer intermediating forces with ties to fewer other structures (favor with a section editor, who has a relationship with an editor in chief, who has a relationship with a publisher, who has a relationship with suppliers, advertisers, the physical plant, unions, etc.)
And the generational-leftist trick of tying them together, on a single axis, such that progress on any would unlock resources for others and any force could draw on reserves, also how with the internet you have to be defeated a lot harder to disappear from the conversation – a lot of 70s-80s stuff was just not carried across to suburbanism…
But now as it falls short and becomes clear there is enough mojo to hold the line on some but not all of the ground claimed (which bet they’re wishing they slowed their roll to institutionalize and fortify now) you’ll get fights over which ones it is, disunity
Forces that don’t rely on masses, that have full-spectrum capabilities in house, are gonna have an interior lines advantage for a while
