it continues to amaze me how often Americans have to literally get on their knees in front of police

That’s even worse than I thought it was.

somehow “I’m here to film you brutalising innocent civilians” isn’t the get out of brutalisation free card that some journalists thought it was.

This is the most amazing thing to me. Like, are there journalists who really think the legalisms that are being run over roughshod when it comes to protesters will be magically respected because they hold up a press badge? It’s not like being a Respectable Citizen is a force field protecting anybody else right now.

I think it’s that they expect a level of rational self interest from police. Attacking a journalist is a much stupider thing to do from a purely selfish cost benefit analysis, because they’re the people who can spread it the most, so you are more likely to face punishment.

I think the likelihood of any cop facing punishment for anything that happens at these protests is very, very low, and I think they know that. And the reports should, but maybe I’m just jaded.

I’m just amused by the journalist at a riot in a scrum as police lines engage going “I’m special, I’m the protagonist, Vice publishes me!” and expecting the police to stop, listen, and nod like “well, then”.
