it feels weird to me that the function of the lens depends entirely on its surface. like inside the lens it just moves in a straight line, it might as well be void (except that thered be another surface to the void, and the light would bend at it)
this is the principle behind Fresnel lenses!
you don’t need all the non-surface parts of the lens, so you can just get rid of them
