I don’t have ADHD (it’s okay, I have bipolar instead) and I don’t think this is an ADHD-only thing (as evidenced by this sentence, and no, I’m not forcing it here).
It’s simply that parentheses fit the logical structure of some thoughts, in the order that you would think or read them.
In my first sentence, the first parentheses could be functionally replaced by em dashes—which would serve the same purpose but with a more pretentious cast—but the thought in the final parentheses couldn’t be expressed via any other syntactic construction in a comparably straightforward fashion.
when I use parentheses it’s often in a place where really what I would like is footnotes.
I used to try to do footnotes on tumblr but it was a pain and it was one of those things that definitely looked different on mobile vs desktop
sometimes I throw the footnotes in the tags but this is also kind of awkward
Yooo, guess who knew the ( [ { } ] ) precedence of nested brackets by third grade?
