It was not as solidly established as “Jake Gyllenhaal is bi” or “Harrison Ford is a stoner”, but when I was in LA “Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are each other’s beards” was actually the Hollywood rumor I heard most often

is it really still possible to keep that at the level of rumour today, for that long?

I mean, “a rumor about the sexual proclivities of a prominent Hollywood figure circulated freely among people in direct (or even indirect, industry) contact but not the wider public” does honestly not strike me as at odds with what we know of modern practice
