is it really still possible to keep that at the level of rumour today, for that long?

I mean, “a rumor about the sexual proclivities of a prominent Hollywood figure circulated freely among people in direct (or even indirect, industry) contact but not the wider public” does honestly not strike me as at odds with what we know of modern practice
