I’ve had an eyebrow up about attempts to push American tipping norms from 15% to 18% but I’m willing to accept that labor inputs constitute a bigger share of the total input pie now and should be compensated accordingly

You see on the one hand it doesn’t feel like more but on the other (before apps, lol) it’s a lot easier to mentally calculate 20%, isn’t it?

very curious to see if Americans will ever figure out how to price services with a single number instead of factoring out labour costs

sob hate tipping so much just tell me how much the thing actually costs and I will pay you I will HAPPILY pay you don’t make me guess just tell me the goddamn real number up front oh my goddddddd I hate tipping!!!!

Just so you know, anyone who has worked in restaurants automatically tips 20% every single time. The fact that the math is easier is only a bonus. (22%+ for superior service)

If you’re genuinely broke, 15% is morally okay. If not, you should really treat the people serving you better.

Otherwise you’re saying they should only make $2.50 an hour. (And arguments about the validity of the system are totally unrelated to how much to tip.

(It’s fairly common for waitstaff to have money taken from them for other non-tipped staff. It’s also one of the few times you get to spend money and know it entirely goes to the bottom rung of the ladder directly.)

I remember a study from like, Wicker Park in Chicago in the ‘00s that found hipster-scene bartenders would tip extravagantly to other bartenders, who would go to yet other bars and tip extravagantly to other bartenders, and the entire effect was kind of an industry potlach that left them better networked but at about the same net income they would be without any of this
