I just want to say again, I went to college with the anime club that first fansubbed Utena, and it’s been a real pleasurable surprise to see that one be canonized
I don’t think any of the people who worked on the translation were still around, even the grad students, but it was a canonical part of our rotation such that every undergraduate would be exposed to it once
Up there with what, Eva, Cowboy Bebop, Patlabor (!), I bet they’re not still showing Escaflowne
Record of fuckin’ Lodoss War! You know that one was a guy writing up his D&D campaign?
Lodoss being a writeup of a D&D campaign puts it firmly in the tradition of other fantasy media, like Dragonlance or Shannara.
I’m surprised that Eacaflowne didn’t last, actually. It was super-popular in our club community. I guess it was the lack of shipping possibilities (and no outright queerbaiting either).
Actually, you know what else was really well-regarded in our community and has disappeared without a trace? Giant Robo.
The retro one? Yeah, we had that, I get the sense it was really worthwhile in the context of a dense and long-running mecha tradition that wasn’t escaping Eva’s gravity field.
Martian Successor Nadesico still has potential, I think
Like, the first or second episode where they’re still on Earth, in shallow tidal flats, and they come under fire and have to turn on the gravity shields and crush the people under them…
