How much spanking would it take to make you understand that beating kids is wrong, if your parents told you "Beating kids is wrong" as they did it? If the answer is "none", why do you think any other lesson can be imparted by saying it while hitting you?

No that’s the thing, beating kids for X doesn’t “teach them X is wrong”, but that beating people as a mechanism of domination structuring social organization is right. Like its detractors say! And they pass this on across generations, and at any snapshot moment-in-time this organizes society into a functional hierarchy, in which select objectives are chosen and then humanity is channeled towards those objectives

Really think about what it meant the post-60s iconic figure of the “runaway”, who was implicitly escaping abuse from her parents but exposed to the dangers of the “street”. And then think about what people are really doing when they try to suppress that by state carceral force, or judgment of panoptic Big Other?

I might not have been able to vocalize it yet but this is why, growing up in the ‘80s and '90s, I thought that a continuation of the trendline I picked up from cultural detritus required us to be abandoned to grow up as prey to the open world, to be as a cohort shaped and adapted to it, and saw whatever “family values” reassertion as a horror
