One thing that I think is important to note is that all of the dire predictions by mid-twentieth century conservative authors about the putative negative effects of abolishing corporal punishment–that it would result in a bunch of spoiled brats, like Eustace Clarence Scrubb in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis, or even that it would be bring about the complete collapse of democracy due to roving bands of criminal youth, as in Heinlein’s Starship Troopers–empirically completely failed to come to pass.
In fact, Heinlein’s prediction is particularly egregious, because it is literally the opposite of what ended up happening.
but if authority figures don’t beat the shit out of kids, how will the kids know how to pass the trauma on to the next generation??
this but 100% unironically
