A little disorienting to learn my parents do the “British” thing of making tea with water heated in a kettle and thinking microwaving it is weird and degraded

They’re right. Why the fuck would you boil water in the microwave?

Found the Brit

The realistic answer, @warringgods, is electric standalone kettles aren’t a typical appliance here (any more than those tall Japanese automatic ricemakers, though you sometimes see squatter ones with the dimensions of a pot and pot-style lids). We have stove kettles, but those take a while to boil, and anyway, we already have an appliance that heats water quickly: the microwave!

I’m Australian

Awwww!
