Having to have a mainstream celeb to sell a movie is something I thought we were getting over. Who on this earth would only decide to see a movie about Mario because it has like Captain Disney man in it? Who was this decision for???
*It’s important to note that the actor everyone already recognizes as Mario’s voice, in all Mario video games since 1990, was fully available to do this movie and even has an unspecified cameo role in it, so yes the job was only given to anyone else for name recognition and marketing purposes.
Like, because of this Chris Pratt can go on a late-nite talk show for an interview that’s mostly about being Chris Pratt, but they’ll talk about the movie and play a teaser clip to the audience of millions. There’ll be a magazine in the supermarket checkout line with a cover of Chris Pratt dressed as Mario that’ll remind people of the movie, if they buy and read it there’s an article that reminds them more. Charles Martinet wouldn’t get that free advertising. At this point the major cost and challenge to releasing a movie isn’t actually making it, it’s building an audience by promoting it.
