One of the more profound bits of my college education was taking a course on the development of American Protestantism and then learning about the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, and the later spread of Nichiren and Pure Land Buddhisms and the 20th century “new religions” and realizing how much of the details in all cases had nothing to do with the particulars but reflected shared dynamics of religions in competition in a world of humans and structures of power relations
