It\u2019s been totally forgotten how the n-word was a class\u00a0label, dividing things inside the black communities of the South. You could be a lower/middle class POC working retail or at some state institution (the highest plateau of which, besides minister, was teacher at the all black school), or you could live on the other side of the tracks, in and out of jail, home all day with at most itinerant work, and very involved in disorganized crime. Every POC on the\u00a0\u201cright\u201d side of the tracks was terrified of that fate more than anything, which was in the power of white people to bestow - either with a single night in jail losing you your job, or even the power of this single slur to drop them into the perception of a lower class.
Weird how the Portland experience was you could be a pillar of the black community and fuck as many teenagers as you want, someone has to be pillar of the black community
