feel like there was sort of a wave of “parent realizing theyre gay” stories but its weird to think how era-specific those are, like, presumably “people who are in their like, 50s, and didnt realize they were gay until after having a kid” are gonna be relatively rare in like, 20-30 years
another thing going on is that my parents and grandparents generations seem to like… mostly not believe in bisexuals…
like when i was a kid our governor jim mcgreevy sexually harassed one of his appointees, and then duped everyone ive spoken to about it that this was a consensual relaionship and the guy was his boyfriend. And part of that narrative was portraying himself as a tragic closeted gay living a lie with his family, I guess for sympathy from liberals. But his victim was on Larry King’s show like first of all I’m straight, second of all McGreevy’s bisexual. He’s not forced by society into repressing his sexuality for marriage except for like, monogamy and how you’re not allowed to sexually harass people
also my dad’s best friend is definitely bisexual. I know this. It’s a description of an obvious lifelong pattern of behavior. He cheated on his wife with a man and got divorced. And somehow my dad is interpreting this as he was always a repressed gay but got married anyway and now he’s come out and consequently ended his marriage and it’s like… this narrative requires willful blindness for the sake of a binary classification of sexuality
i think that in 20-30 years the existence of bisexuality will be acknowledged by basically everybody but who knows
Yeah I’ve said before, bisexuality even makes some bits of anti-gay stuff make more sense. Like, some preacher pushing against the homos was found to have been hooking up with men on the road away from his wife we’d be like “aaah, I see, a self-hating gay!” But “preacher advocates loyal monogamy, has sidepieces” is a tale as old as time, and “guy who marries a woman and pushes that as the defining institution in society but has sex with men” really makes more sense as both-ways-having bisexual.
Hell, the entire edifice of “we need to culturally encode a preference for heterosexuality, so that people will form opposite-sex relationships, not same-sex ones as they might otherwise” is a notion that would only really make sense to a bisexual.
