Remembering this pretty good script I read when I was in Hollywood, The Short Season. The GM of a locally-beloved but no-hope small-market MLB-expy team that did stunts to keep up interest fielded an all little-people team one game only to find that with their tiny strike zones they were quite competitive. They advanced through the season while the league plotted to move the team to a big city, there was a romantic subplot, etc.

It was fun! The thing with getting it produced would be – well one, Hollywood doesn’t make that kinda midlist adult sports movie anymore. Jerry Maguire and Tin Cup were ‘96 (Costner woulda been great for the GM, Gwyneth Paltrow as the love interest.) then what? BASEketball? Bagger Vance, notorious stinker? The Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell farces? Moneyball is the closest but it’s too serious.

Second, there was no one team member role meaty enough to capture Peter Dinklage or Warwick Davis’s interest – they each got a featured moment and maybe 3 were part of the core cast of various plot threads, but really they were an ensemble adding a colorful backdrop to the front office plots. And those two would’ve been the only way that if you could even cast the team that carried half the movie it wouldn’t be entirely And Introducing nobodies.
