becoming recognized on my block for my trees and suddenly realizing
- wait I don’t want this
- then why did you put so much proud effort into your trees?
Ah! A bunch of neighbors have been talking to me lately and I assumed I was just more often dumping stuff on that compost pile and seeing them walk the adjacent path newly lined with woodchips

but they were weirdly positive, even gushing, which was weird.
But after having enough conversations I’m putting together that by spending the last few years clearing this area and the nearby yards (and parking strips!) of broadleaf weeds and tree of heaven and blackberry bramble, and trimming the trees so they don’t look dark and witchy and overgrown, I have in fact made the gateway of the block from a dark and sinister wood into an inviting meadow, and connected it to a nearby school and public park in such a way that has impressed homebuyers with money, taste, and options to the point they comment on it and has effectively made my neighbors tens of thousands of dollars richer.
How fucking bourgeois is that?
